Shettima arrives New York for 80th UNGA
Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which will run from Monday, September 22 to Sunday, September 28, 2025. He is representing President Bola Tinubu at the week-long global gathering.
Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the high-level general debates, unveil the country’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, and participate in several bilateral meetings and side events. He will also attend the Global Champions roundtable on adequate and affordable housing.
According to his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President was received on arrival by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, Nigeria’s Permanent Mission officials, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji, as well as senior defence representatives.
Speaking on Nigeria’s agenda for this year’s UNGA, Ambassador Tuggar said the country is leading the push for a United Nations Global Convention on Taxation and advocating for Africa’s permanent membership of the UN Security Council under the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration. He also noted that Shettima would engage in peace and security talks on Gaza, Sudan, and Eastern Congo, in addition to attending the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting.
Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, stressed that Nigeria’s participation will boost its profile as an investment hub, with focus on solid minerals, agriculture, and skills-based education. Similarly, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Olajumoke Oduwole said the Vice President will host “Nigeria Investment Day” to showcase priority sectors such as solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology.
Nigeria’s delegation is optimistic that its active participation in the 80th UNGA will strengthen its global standing, attract fresh investments, and reinforce its role as one of Africa’s leading economies.
