Gov Bala Mohammed signals move to ADC as PDP crisis deepens ahead of 2027
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has identified the African Democratic Congress as his preferred political platform, intensifying speculation over a possible exit from the Peoples Democratic Party.
Mohammed made the disclosure on Tuesday after hosting an ADC delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, at Ramat House in Bauchi.
The governor said his decision followed exhaustive but unsuccessful efforts to resolve the lingering internal crisis within the PDP. According to him, consultations across political lines have positioned the ADC as the most viable alternative aligned with his political vision.
“We left all our options open, including the All Progressives Congress, but we realized we cannot remain where we are not wanted. We must find a place within the opposition,” Mohammed stated.
Describing the ADC as “enduring and widely acceptable,” the governor noted that ongoing engagements with stakeholders at both state and national levels accounted for the delay in making a final decision. He added that a formal announcement on his defection would be made soon, as discussions were being finalised to ensure a seamless transition.
Mohammed stressed the importance of unity among opposition forces, noting that broad-based consultations were key to building a formidable political front ahead of the 2027 elections. “The people in ADC are our brothers. Some joined earlier, and we are joining now,” he said.
In his remarks, Lawal warned that Nigeria’s future could be imperiled if the ruling party retains power beyond 2027. He disclosed that efforts were underway to consolidate opposition forces under the leadership of former Senate President David Mark, describing the next general elections as a defining moment for the country.
The development underscores intensifying political realignments nationwide, as key actors reposition themselves amid growing uncertainty within the opposition bloc.
