Traffic gridlock as floodwaters block road in Abuja
Residents and motorists in the Wuye area of Abuja were on Monday thrown into severe traffic congestion after heavy rainfall led to flooding along the major road adjacent to the Wuye International Market and the Family Worship Centre.
The downpour, which lasted for several hours earlier in the day, caused floodwaters to overflow onto the road, making movement difficult for commuters and leaving several vehicles stranded in the gridlock.
Eyewitnesses attributed the flooding to blocked drainage channels along the affected route, noting that the situation has become a recurring challenge whenever there is heavy rainfall in the area.
Motorists and residents expressed concern over the development and called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to urgently intervene by clearing the drainages and implementing lasting measures to prevent a recurrence during the rainy season.
They warned that failure to address the situation could expose road users and nearby residents to greater risks, especially as the rains intensify across the Federal Capital Territory.
