Guinea-Bissau Crush Super Eagles 3-0 in 2027 AFCON Qualifier

The Super Eagles suffered a heavy defeat in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, losing 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau on Tuesday.

Franculino Djú opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, firing a left-footed shot past Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after being played through by Renato Nhaga.

Nigeria had opportunities to restore parity before the break, with Alex Iwobi creating a chance for Ademola Lookman, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Embadjé produced an important save to preserve his side’s lead.

The hosts continued to threaten after the restart and doubled their advantage in the 65th minute through Mama Baldé.

Baldé received the ball from Mamadi Camará on the left before sending a low shot into the net to make it 2-0.

Nigeria head coach made changes in an attempt to turn the game around, introducing George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika for Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi in the 75th minute.

However, the changes failed to produce the desired response as the Super Eagles struggled to break down the Guinea-Bissau defence.

Ilenikhena came close to reducing the deficit in the 85th minute, but Embadjé was again equal to the effort, making another save to deny the Nigerian forward.

Guinea-Bissau completed the rout in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló added a third goal.

Djaló was played through by Tamble Monteiro before calmly finishing with his right foot to seal a 3-0 victory for the hosts.

The result is a setback for Nigeria, who had opened their Group L campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar.

The Super Eagles will now need to recover quickly and secure positive results in their remaining qualifying matches as they continue their bid to reach the 2027 AFCON finals.
