Nigeria and UK strengthen Legislative ties to foster better Governance
Kamoru Ogunlana, the Clerk to the National Assembly has stressed the need for a legislative drafting manual to improve the quality of Nigeria’s legislation during a visit from a British Parliament delegation led by Kate Osamor.
He emphasized the significance of enhancing Nigeria’s legislative framework by drawing on the historical relationship between the Nigerian and British Parliaments. Ogunlana noted that both nations share a commitment to good governance, democracy, and human rights.

By collaborating with the British Parliament, Ogunlana aims to integrate global best practices into Nigeria’s lawmaking processes.
This partnership is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s legislative capabilities, enhance its democratic systems, and ultimately improve the lives of its citizens.
He said “As members of the British Parliament, you share a legacy of fostering governance that reflects the will of the people and champions rights and freedoms,”

“We take immense pride in the path we have forged and the collaborative spirit we have nurtured with you over the decades” he added
He also highlighted the significance of the visit, stating that “your visit is particularly significant as it provides an opportunity to strengthen our dialogue on various issues, including economic cooperation, security, and the fight against corruption.”
Furthermore, he expressed eagerness to exchange ideas and learn from the British Parliament’s experiences, saying “we are eager to exchange ideas and learn from your experiences, which can enhance our efforts in building a more robust democratic institution.”
The development of a legislative drafting manual is crucial in promoting transparency, accountability, and effective governance. It will provide a standardized framework for legislative drafting, ensuring that laws are clear, concise, and unambiguous.
This partnership between the National Assembly and the British Parliament marks a significant step towards enhancing the quality of legislation in Nigeria and promoting good governance, democracy, and human rights.
