Liverpool bolster lead with dramatic 3-1 win over Southampton
Darwin Nunez proved pivotal in Liverpool’s 3-1 triumph over Southampton, netting a goal and securing a penalty after a VAR review spared him from a potential red card.
His impactful performance was key to Liverpool’s success at Anfield.
The win extended Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to 16 points.
In the first half, Nunez appeared to kick out at Kyle Walker-Peters during stoppage time, prompting a review by referee Lewis Smith, who showed Nunez a yellow card.
After a VAR check, overseen by Derek Eaton, it was determined there had been no clear and obvious error in the decision.
Mohamed Salah capitalized on the opportunity, scoring his 26th goal in 29 Premier League matches this season. He later added a second with a penalty, awarded after Yukinari Sugawara was penalized for handball.
The result saw Liverpool extend their dominance at the top of the Premier League, leaving Southampton to reflect on what might have been had Nunez been sent off.
