May D: Why Davido Refused to Stay in My Room at Psquare’s House

Nigerian Afropop singer May D has opened up about his past experiences with the famous music duo Psquare and the celebrated artist Davido.
In an interview on The Honest Bunch podcast, May D explained why he declined a contract with Psquare’s music label, Square Records, and shared details about his time living at their house.
May D revealed that during his time with Psquare, he was housed in their boys’ quarters. He explained that his living situation led him to question whether signing a deal with Square Records would support his growth as an artist.
“I was living in their boys’ quarters while working on music with them,” he said. “If I were to sign with them, I expected better living conditions—perhaps a room or a flat. It is not about luxury; it is about respect and progress. I began to think about my future. How could I sign a contract and still be staying in the boys’ quarters?”
May D emphasised that it was not about complaining but fairness. He believed a small change, such as being given one of the empty rooms in their house, would have made a significant difference.
The singer also shared an anecdote involving Davido. According to May D, there was a time when Davido was trying to avoid his father and was unable to stay in hotels because his father had blocked his access to them. Davido then reached out to May D, hoping to stay with him.
“David called me and said, ‘I need a place to stay. Can I stay at your house? My dad has blocked all the hotels in Nigeria.’ So I told him, ‘Sure, let’s go to Psquare’s house,’” May D recounted.
However, when Davido saw the condition of May D’s room, he was shocked and decided against staying.
“When David got to my room, he was like, ‘May D, is this where you stay?’ He was so surprised. Then he said, ‘I cannot stay here.’ If I had my own room, it would have been a different story.”
He added, “If I had an artist today, I would ensure they are comfortable. It does not have to be a mansion, but it is important to treat people with dignity and show them they are valued.”
