2027: ‘A Vote for Obi, NDC Is a Vote to Kill APGA’ — Anambra Govt
The Anambra State Government has urged supporters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to defend the party and resist the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
The state government made the call in a post titled “A Betrayal Alert for Ndi APGA”, published on its official X account on Monday.
In the post, the government accused Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the NDC, of working against APGA since leaving the party in 2014.
The government declared, “A vote for Peter Obi and the NDC is a vote to kill APGA.”
It further alleged that Obi had been working against the party since his departure.
“Since 2014, Obi has had one mission: to destroy the party that made him. In 2025, while President Tinubu stood with APGA, Obi backed opposition to bury us,” the statement alleged.
The government also urged APGA supporters not to abandon the party for Obi.
“Do not be deceived by a man who abandoned his own house. Anambra is APGA. Ndi APGA, defend your home. Resist the NDC,” it stated.
The latest statement adds to the growing political exchanges between the Anambra State Government and Obi, who served as governor of the state on the APGA platform before leaving the party.
Obi became governor in March 2006 and served until March 2014, although his first tenure was interrupted by his impeachment in November 2006.
He formally left APGA in October 2014 and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He later resigned from the PDP in May 2022 and joined the Labour Party, under which he contested the 2023 presidential election.
Obi finished third in the 2023 presidential election, behind Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was declared the winner.
In December 2025, Obi left the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with the party formally announcing his entry on December 31, 2025.
He subsequently aligned with the NDC ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The latest political confrontation comes against the backdrop of an earlier dispute between Obi and the Anambra State Government over financial obligations and projects implemented during his tenure as governor.
The disagreement became public in September after the state Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor, said the government was still servicing loans obtained by previous administrations, including those of Obi and former governor Willie Obiano.
Obi rejected the claim, insisting that he left office without outstanding obligations of the nature alleged by the state government.
He said his administration did not owe salaries, pensions or contractors when he left office and also claimed that it left N2.1 billion in ecological funds for the state.
The state government subsequently challenged his account.
In a statement issued on September 16, the state Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, said Obi left behind $123.77 million in external debt when he concluded his tenure.
According to the government, the figure relates to eight external facilities associated with projects undertaken during Obi’s administration.
Mefor also disputed Obi’s claim regarding the N2.1 billion ecological fund, saying there was no evidence that the money had been kept in First Bank.
Obi subsequently rejected the characterisation of the $123.77 million as debt personally incurred by him, arguing that the financing was largely connected to development programmes involving the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
He also maintained that he did not personally approach any financial institution to borrow money or issue a bond on behalf of Anambra State.
The latest statement from the state government has now shifted the focus of the disagreement from the financial dispute to the broader political relationship between Obi and APGA, with both sides positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
