JUST-IN: Tinubu set to unveil new Ambassadors amid U.S. tensions
President Bola Tinubu is set to announce the appointment of new ambassadors to key strategic nations as part of a multi-pronged diplomatic response to counter the recent threat of U.S. military intervention issued by President Donald Trump.
According to ARISE News, the President has ordered the immediate conclusion of security vetting for the nominees, with official announcements expected as early as next week.
According to senior government sources, this marks the final stage of Nigeria’s long-delayed ambassadorial appointments after months of limited diplomatic representation abroad. The move is part of efforts to restore Nigeria’s global influence and strengthen foreign relations amid heightened international scrutiny.
The overhaul dates back to September 2023 when President Tinubu recalled all ambassadors from Nigeria’s 109 foreign missions as part of a comprehensive foreign service restructuring. Since then, most embassies have been headed by chargés d’affaires, a temporary arrangement that foreign policy experts say has weakened Nigeria’s voice in global affairs and sensitive negotiations.
Diplomatic officials have repeatedly stressed that ambassador-level representation is crucial, especially as Nigeria navigates complex international developments and defends its sovereignty.
The renewed urgency follows escalating diplomatic tensions with Washington after Trump’s recent threats of military action over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria — claims that Nigerian authorities have strongly denied.
