Passengers safe after Train derailment in Kogi State
A passenger train travelling from Itakpe to Warri derailed on Saturday in Kogi State, leaving travellers stranded for several hours before being safely rescued by security operatives.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at Adogo community in Ajaokuta Local Government Area, confirmed CSP William Ovye-Aya, Police Public Relations Officer of the Kogi Command, to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lokoja.
Following a distress call, Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi immediately dispatched officers to the scene to provide security and assist the affected passengers.
“The CP personally visited the Adogo derailment site for an on-the-spot assessment. He met with officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the stranded passengers,” Ovye-Aya stated.
Additional security personnel were deployed to safeguard both the passengers and railway facilities. All travellers were safely evacuated to Ajaokuta station and later assisted in continuing their journeys.
The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property, working closely with other security agencies across the state.
