Gongola Elders reject alleged imposition of APC governorship candidate in Adamawa
Elders of the Gongola peoples in Adamawa State have rejected what they described as attempts to impose a governorship candidate within the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the group, represented by Markus Gundiri, warned that any move to sidestep internal democracy in selecting the party’s flagbearer would be resisted.
The elders stated that although they support the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the broader objectives of the APC at the national level, they would not accept what they termed “undemocratic imposition” at the state level.
“We will not accept, tolerate, or allow any form of imposition on our people. Such tendencies are an affront to internal party democracy and a dangerous slide towards political authoritarianism,” the group said.
They emphasised that the party’s governorship candidate must emerge through a transparent and credible primary election, stressing the need for a level playing field for all aspirants.
According to them, any manipulation of the process could weaken the party’s chances in the general election and erode trust among stakeholders.
The elders further warned that ignoring the collective will of party members in Adamawa could spark resistance from ethnic groups within the state.
“Imposition only breeds resentment, weakens the party, and ultimately guarantees defeat at the general elections,” they added.
The group called on APC leaders at both national and state levels to uphold fairness and credibility in the selection process, urging all political actors to respect democratic principles as preparations intensify for the 2027 polls.
