Brighton Thrash 10-Man Aston Villa 4-0 in Premier League Opener

Brighton & Hove Albion made a flying start to their Premier League campaign on Sunday, cruising to a convincing 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium.

The hosts needed just eight minutes to break the deadlock after a defensive mistake from Villa presented Maxim De Cuyper with an opportunity inside the box. His effort struck the post before deflecting into the net off Victor Lindelof.

De Cuyper doubled Brighton’s advantage 10 minutes later, finishing from close range after Georginio Rutter’s well-timed run behind the Villa defence created the opening.

Villa, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season and won the Europa League, struggled to recover as Brighton continued to dominate.

Jack Hinshelwood made it 3-0 shortly before the half-hour mark, tapping home after Diego Gomez redirected De Cuyper’s cross across the face of goal.

The Seagulls then struck again just a minute later.

Yasin Ayari dispossessed Joao Gomes inside the Villa penalty area before setting up Hinshelwood, who calmly finished to complete his brace and send Brighton into a commanding 4-0 lead.

Villa’s difficult afternoon worsened shortly before half-time when Gomes was sent off following a VAR review.

The midfielder, who had already been booked, was shown a straight red card after appearing to kick out at Rutter.

Villa had briefly threatened to take the lead early in the match when Emiliano Buendia capitalised on a Brighton error and fired narrowly wide.

However, Brighton quickly seized control and punished a series of defensive errors to establish an unassailable advantage before the break.

The visitors managed to prevent any further damage after the interval, with Brighton unable to add to their four-goal advantage.

It mattered little, however, as Fabian Hurzeler’s side completed a dominant opening-day victory, while Villa were left to reflect on a disastrous afternoon that included four conceded goals and a red card.
