Senegal claims top honors at 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling tournament in Abuja

The 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament in Abuja ended with groundbreaking achievements, marking the inaugural inclusion of a women’s category.
Senegal took the top spot by defeating Nigeria in the team final, while the event highlighted African unity with participation from 55 athletes representing 11 countries.
The event reinforced ECOWAS’ commitment to regional integration, youth empowerment, and the preservation of cultural heritage through sports. Senegal emerged victorious, securing first place, while Nigeria and Benin claimed second and third positions, respectively.
A historic highlight of this year’s tournament was the inclusion of female wrestlers for the first time in TOLAC’s history. This landmark achievement, which coincided with International Women’s Day, was widely celebrated as a step toward gender equality in traditional African sports. The participation of women not only expanded the competition’s scope but also set a precedent for future tournaments.
Beyond competition, TOLAC has once again demonstrated the unifying power of sports in West Africa. By bringing together athletes from across the region, the tournament has strengthened diplomatic ties, fostered mutual understanding, and showcased the shared cultural heritage of ECOWAS member states.
As ECOWAS marks five decades of regional cooperation, the success of TOLAC underscores its role in promoting cross-border unity. The tournament continues to serve as a platform for international recognition of African wrestling, enhancing its status as both a sport and a symbol of cultural identity.
With each edition, TOLAC not only highlights athletic excellence but also raises important conversations about inclusion and tradition. As the tournament evolves, will African wrestling gain greater global recognition, and can it serve as a model for integrating traditional sports into modern international competitions?
