NSCDC trains over 50 officers in sign Language to promote inclusive security
Over 50 officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have undergone intensive sign language training to promote inclusive security and enhance communication with persons with disabilities.
Speaking at the closing ceremony in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commandant of the NSCDC, Dr Olusola Odumosu, described the initiative as a strategic investment aligned with the Corps’ core mandate of ensuring public safety and national security.

Dr Odumosu noted that the five-day training, the first of its kind for security operatives in Nigeria, was designed to strengthen the capacity of NSCDC personnel in sign language, focusing on improving investigations, interrogations, and intelligence gathering.
“By equipping our personnel with sign language skills, we are breaking down a long-standing communication barrier between law enforcement and the deaf community,” he said.
He added that it had always been his vision for the FCT Command to lead in innovation, inclusivity, and professional development within the Corps and across the nation’s security architecture.
“From personnel reorientation and capacity-building to recognising excellence through our reward system, we are consistently raising the bar. This sign language training is a bold, progressive, and impactful step towards achieving that vision,” Dr Odumosu stated.

The facilitator of the training, Dr Arowolo Ayoola, who is also the Chief Executive of Data Lead Africa Foundation, commended the NSCDC for the initiative. He emphasised the importance of such training in ensuring that people with disabilities, particularly those who are deaf, are not denied justice due to communication challenges.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates to the trained officers and an award of recognition to Dr Odumosu for his commitment to inclusivity and innovation within the Corps.
