FCT CP seeks quicker Court orders, flags delays in criminal trials

The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has called for stronger collaboration between the police and the judiciary to enhance criminal investigations and improve justice delivery in the nation’s capital.

Sanusi made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, in Abuja.

According to the FCT Police Command, the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing partnership between the police and the judiciary in the administration of justice within the FCT.

During the meeting, the police commissioner commended the cordial relationship between the command and the High Court, stressing that effective policing and justice delivery are closely linked and require sustained cooperation.

Sanusi also highlighted challenges affecting criminal investigations, urging the judiciary to facilitate the prompt issuance of legal authorisations such as search warrants, bench warrants and other court orders critical to investigations, law enforcement and prosecution.

The commissioner further expressed concern over delays in the prosecution of criminal cases, noting that prolonged trials often result in suspects remaining in police custody for extended periods, thereby contributing to congestion in detention facilities.

Responding, Justice Yusuf welcomed the police commissioner and his delegation, describing Sanusi’s appointment as timely and expressing confidence that his experience would strengthen security and justice administration in the FCT.

The Chief Judge acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the police commissioner of the judiciary’s continued support in promoting efficient justice delivery. He also identified areas requiring the attention of the police and emphasised the need for sustained cooperation between both institutions.

The visit ended with the exchange of goodwill messages, commemorative gifts and group photographs, reaffirming the commitment of both the judiciary and the police to strengthening the rule of law and improving public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.
