JUST IN: Supreme Court adjourns judgment in Edo Guber election dispute

The Supreme Court has adjourned indefinitely the judgment in the legal tussle over the Edo State Governorship Election.

The court, after hearing arguments from both sides regarding the election that brought Senator Monday Obekpolo to office, decided to postpone its verdict without setting a date.

Presiding Justice Garba Lawal announced that the date for delivering the judgment would be communicated to all parties later.

In the appeal, Mr. Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), represented by senior lawyer Ken Mosia, SAN, urged the apex court to declare Ighodalo the rightful winner of the election, claiming he polled the majority of lawful votes.

On the other hand, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), through its counsel Kanu Agabi, SAN, argued for the dismissal of the appeal, describing it as lacking merit.

INEC contended that the PDP and its candidate, having previously labelled the election invalid due to alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, could not turn around to ask to be declared winners of the same election.

The commission accused the appellants of inconsistency in their demands and insisted the case be struck out for want of merit.
