NAWOJ FCT cautions adolescents on safe valentine’s day celebrations
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT, under the leadership of Chairperson Bassey Ita Ikpang, has issued a strong advisory to adolescents, particularly young girls in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its suburbs, urging them to exercise caution while celebrating the season of love.
In a heartfelt message, Mrs Ikpang emphasised the importance of self-care and making informed choices during the celebrations. She reminded young people that true love begins with valuing oneself and prioritising well-being. While Valentine’s Day is a time to express kindness, joy, and affection, she stressed the need for adolescents to stay safe and avoid risky behaviours.
“Love should uplift and empower you, not put you at risk,” Mrs Ikpang stated, encouraging young people to be health-conscious and to seek guidance when in doubt. She advised adolescents to remain in safe environments and to make decisions that protect their physical, emotional, and mental health.
As a media HIV advocate, Mrs Ikpang reiterated NAWOJ’s commitment to advocating for the rights, safety, and future of young girls. She urged them to celebrate responsibly, with wisdom, self-respect, and confidence in making choices that support a healthy and promising future.
The Chairperson also issued a strong caution, reminding adolescents that:
AIDS is real – Protect yourself.
Say no to gender-based violence.
Love should never come at the cost of your safety and well-being.
While extending her best wishes for a happy and safe Valentine’s Day, Mrs Ikpang called on adolescents to stay informed, prioritise their dignity, and enjoy the season responsibly.
