NFF mourns Legendary Ex-Captain Christian Chukwu
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep sadness over the death of Nigerian football legend, Christian Chukwuemeka Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday in Enugu at the age of 74.
Fondly known as “Chairman” for his leadership and powerful presence both on and off the pitch, Chukwu was the captain of the Green Eagles squad that clinched Nigeria’s first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980.
He famously received the Unity Cup from then President Shehu Shagari at the National Stadium in Surulere on March 22, 1980—a moment etched in the nation’s football history.
In a statement, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, described Chukwu as “a great man” and a symbol of discipline, commitment, and strong leadership.
Before his 1980 triumph, Chukwu was also part of the Nigerian squads that won bronze medals at the 1976 and 1978 AFCON tournaments held in Ethiopia and Ghana, respectively. He was later honoured as Player of the Tournament during Nigeria’s 1980 victory on home soil.
Born on January 4, 1951, Chukwu went on to become a respected coach, managing Enugu Rangers, the Kenyan national team, and later the Super Eagles from 2002. He led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia.
His death comes just weeks after Nigeria marked the 45th anniversary of the 1980 AFCON win—an event that forever defined Chukwu’s place in African football.
