Police must uphold integrity, Disu charges officers at National Police Day

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has urged personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to maintain discipline and uphold the integrity of their profession, warning against actions that could tarnish the image of the force.

Disu made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during the 2026 National Police Day celebration themed ‘Community Partnership: Building Trust’.

Addressing officers and stakeholders, the police chief described the occasion as a defining moment for the force, stressing the need for reflection, accountability, and renewed commitment to professional policing.

“We must rise above indiscipline, misconduct and every action that diminishes the honour of our uniform,” he said.

He acknowledged the sacrifices and challenges faced by officers across the country, commending their dedication while also insisting on the need for reform and higher standards.

Speaking candidly, Disu warned that rank would not shield any officer from accountability, noting that misconduct would not be tolerated under his leadership.

“Uniform will never excuse abuse, and authority will not override the rule of law,” he stated, adding that discipline within the force would be enforced firmly and fairly.

The IGP also assured personnel of improved welfare, better training, and enhanced operational support, emphasising that a professional police force must be built on well-equipped and motivated officers.

He further extended a message to Nigerians, acknowledging the trust deficit between the police and the public, while pledging efforts to rebuild confidence through transparency and professionalism.

“We understand your concerns. We acknowledge the distance that has grown between the Nigerian people and us, and we are determined to close that gap,” he said.

Disu promised a reformed police institution that would prioritise service over intimidation, partnership over hostility, and respect over fear.

The National Police Day celebration served as a platform to reaffirm the commitment of the force to improved community relations and a more accountable policing system.
