SSANU, NASU issue Seven-Day ultimatum to FG over unpaid allowances
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to resolve lingering issues affecting non-academic staff in universities.
In a joint letter dated September 12, 2025, signed by SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, the unions condemned the “unjust” disbursement of earned allowances, non-payment of withheld salaries, and delays in addressing outstanding agreements.
The unions reminded the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, of their June 18 letter, which prompted a meeting on July 4 with the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU. That meeting resolved to form a tripartite committee to address the skewed distribution of ₦50 billion earned allowances, where university non-academic staff were shortchanged and staff in Inter-University Centres excluded.
They also recalled the minister’s pledge to expedite payment of two months’ withheld salaries and arrears of the 25/35 percent salary increment but lamented that no progress has been made.
The statement further expressed frustration over the stalled renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU-SSANU agreement. While the government has concluded talks with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the unions said their own negotiations have been ignored despite submitting their memoranda.
“Despite our repeated efforts to draw your attention to address concerns affecting our members in the Universities and Inter-University Centres, there appears to be nothing positive forthcoming from your office,” the unions wrote.
They warned that if the issues remain unresolved within seven days from Monday, September 15, members would embark on a series of industrial actions, including strikes, to press home their demands.
