President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has presented a national honour certificate to Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Nigerian football and his leadership on the national team.
Troost-Ekong, who captained the Super Eagles to a memorable outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, was honoured for his discipline, patriotism and commitment to national service through sports. The defender emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers, earning widespread praise at home and abroad for his resilience and inspiring leadership.
Presenting the certificate, President Tinubu commended Troost-Ekong and his teammates for uniting Nigerians through their performances, noting that football remains a powerful symbol of hope and national pride. He described the Super Eagles’ AFCON campaign as a reflection of determination and the Nigerian spirit of excellence.
Troost-Ekong expressed gratitude to the President and Nigerians for the recognition, saying the honour was dedicated to his teammates, coaches and millions of fans who supported the team throughout the tournament. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue giving his best for the country both on and off the pitch.
The national honour forms part of the federal government’s broader recognition of members of the Super Eagles squad and technical crew for their efforts in projecting Nigeria positively on the continental and global stage.
