Seven miners killed as gunmen attack mining site in Plateau
At least seven miners have been killed following an attack by gunmen on a mining site in Kuru community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night when the assailants reportedly invaded the mining area and opened fire on workers carrying out mining activities.
The attack was confirmed by Emmanuel Solomon, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Artisanal Mining, who said security agencies were alerted after the incident. He added that investigations were ongoing to ascertain the full details of the attack.
According to sources in the area, several other miners sustained injuries, while some were unaccounted for as of Thursday morning.
Security operatives have since been deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence. No arrest had been made at the time of filing this report.
The latest incident adds to recurring security challenges in parts of Plateau State, particularly in mining and rural communities.
