Power supply may decline as gas facilities undergo maintenance
Seplat Energy Plc, joint venture partner of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), has announced a scheduled routine maintenance of its gas production facilities, with a temporary reduction in gas supply expected between February 12 and 15, 2026.
The company, a major supplier of gas into the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC) pipeline network, said the planned maintenance forms part of standard industry safety and asset integrity procedures designed to ensure the continued reliability and safe operation of critical infrastructure.
In a statement issued by NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr. Andy Odeh, the exercise was described as necessary to sustain optimal system performance, strengthen operational resilience, and reduce the likelihood of unexpected outages.
According to the statement, the four-day maintenance window will result in a temporary drop in gas supply into the NGIC network. As a consequence, some power generation companies (GenCos) that depend on the supply may experience reduced gas availability, potentially impacting electricity generation during the period.
“NNPC Ltd and Seplat Energy are working closely to ensure that the maintenance is carried out safely and completed as scheduled. At the same time, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML) is engaging alternative gas suppliers to bridge anticipated supply gaps and maintain network stability,” the statement noted.
The company, however, assured stakeholders that full gas supply into the NGIC system would resume immediately after the maintenance exercise, enabling affected power plants to return to normal operations.
The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilise Nigeria’s power sector, which remains heavily reliant on gas-fired generation.
