Corps Member dies after alleged abortion complications in Ogun, NYSC Official arrested
A tragic incident has unfolded in Ogun State following the death of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps, Victoria Ariyo, who reportedly died after complications arising from a suspected abortion procedure.
Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, was said to have passed away on Tuesday. Her remains have since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Reports indicate that the Nigeria Police Force has arrested the Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the NYSC in the area, Abass Olalekan, in connection with the incident.
While confirming Ariyo’s death, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that investigations are ongoing. However, he declined to comment on the arrest of the NYSC official and his alleged involvement.
Efforts to get a reaction from the NYSC authorities have so far been unsuccessful, with the Ogun State spokesperson of the scheme reportedly unaware of the development at the time of filing this report.
The incident has raised serious concerns, coming barely a month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under mysterious circumstances in the same local government area.
Authorities are yet to provide full details surrounding both cases, as calls grow for a thorough investigation into the safety and welfare of corps members in the state.
