FCT Police launch Violent Crime Response Unit to tackle kidnapping, armed robbery
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched a new operational outfit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in a move aimed at strengthening security and improving rapid response to violent crimes across Abuja.
The launch ceremony, held on Monday, June 8, 2026, took place at the Old SARS Office (Abattoir), Guzape Junction, and was presided over by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, PhD.
The event attracted senior security officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and representatives of sister security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air Force, Immigration Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Also in attendance was the Ona of Abaji and Chairman of the FCT Council of Chiefs, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr. Adamu Baba Yunusa, CON, alongside other dignitaries.
According to the Commissioner of Police, the establishment of the VCRU aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at enhancing proactive policing and curbing rising cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes in the territory.
He explained that the new unit has been strategically divided into five operational sectors across the FCT to ensure improved coverage, faster response time, and stronger intelligence gathering.
CP Sanusi stressed that officers deployed to the unit were carefully screened and trained, warning that misconduct, abuse of power, extortion, and other unprofessional behaviour would not be tolerated.
He also called on residents to support security operations by providing timely and credible information, noting that effective policing requires collaboration between security agencies and the public.
Members of the public were urged to report suspicious activities through designated emergency lines: 08032003913 or 07057337653.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the initiative reflects the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the FCT.
