NUJ calls for end to impunity for crimes against Journalists
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the government, security agencies and relevant institutions to end impunity for crimes against journalists, urging authorities to investigate attacks on media professionals and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
The union made the call on Monday, November 2, 2026, to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
In a statement signed by its President, Alhassan Yahya, the NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom, protecting media workers and seeking justice for journalists who have been targeted, harassed, detained or harmed while carrying out their duties.
The union described journalism as a cornerstone of democracy, noting that it holds public officials accountable, gives voice to marginalised communities and safeguards the public’s right to accurate information.
However, it expressed concern that journalists in Nigeria and other parts of the world continue to face intimidation, unlawful arrests, physical assaults, cyberbullying and violence without adequate accountability.
According to the NUJ, impunity for crimes against journalists undermines democratic discourse and weakens the rule of law. It warned that when perpetrators of violence against media workers face no legal consequences, public confidence in institutions is eroded, while self-censorship and the suppression of information become more likely.
To mark the day, the union urged authorities to thoroughly, independently and transparently investigate reported cases of harassment, physical attacks and unlawful detention involving journalists, and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.
It also called for the enforcement of legal protections against arbitrary arrests, censorship and administrative abuse under the guise of security regulations.
The NUJ urged law enforcement agencies and security personnel to recognise journalists as essential contributors to democratic governance rather than adversaries.
The union further called on media organisations, civil society groups and international partners to work together to establish effective safety protocols and emergency support networks for reporters operating in high-risk environments.
“The NUJ reiterates that a threat to any journalist anywhere is a threat to democratic governance everywhere,” the statement said.
It also urged civil society organisations, human rights groups and members of the public to support efforts to create an environment where journalists can work freely without fear or favour.
“No journalist should pay with their safety, freedom, or life for reporting the truth,” the union declared.
The statement was signed by Alhassan Yahya, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, at the union’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
