NiMet predicts Three-Day Thunderstorms and Dust Haze across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather forecast, predicting thunderstorms and dusty conditions across various parts of the country from Sunday to Tuesday.

According to the weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency forecast moderate dust haze over northern states, including Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa, during the forecast period.

NiMet also indicated the likelihood of isolated thunderstorms occurring in parts of Adamawa and Taraba States within the same timeframe.

For the North-Central region, the agency projected partly cloudy skies in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening across areas such as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue States.

In southern Nigeria, morning thunderstorms are expected in parts of Lagos, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, with further thunderstorms anticipated as the day progresses.

By Monday, clear and sunny weather is expected to prevail across most northern states, although morning thunderstorms may affect parts of Taraba and Adamawa States. Later in the day, thunderstorms are forecast for areas including Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe States.

The North-Central states are also expected to experience morning thunderstorms in Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue, with further stormy weather anticipated in the afternoon and evening.

In the South, thunderstorms are predicted in the morning across Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Edo States, with additional rainfall likely as the day advances.

On Tuesday, NiMet forecasts predominantly sunny skies and patches of cloud cover in the North, accompanied by possible morning thunderstorms in Adamawa and Taraba States. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba.

For North-Central Nigeria, partly cloudy conditions are anticipated in the morning, giving way to thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening over parts of the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger States.

Southern states are likely to experience morning thunderstorms in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa, with further storms predicted as the day progresses.

NiMet advised residents to take necessary safety precautions, as thunderstorms may be accompanied by strong winds, and warned those in the northern region to be cautious of suspended dust particles in the atmosphere.

The agency further urged airline operators to obtain regular weather updates for airports to ensure safe flight operations and encouraged the general public to stay informed by following NiMet’s regular forecasts.
