Felix Agu embraces Nigerian root, joins Super Eagles squad

Werder Bremen defender, Felix Agu, has officially opened a new chapter in his football career by choosing to represent Nigeria at the international level.
The Germany-born full-back, who has Nigerian roots, expressed deep joy at finally connecting with his father’s homeland after FIFA cleared him to don the Super Eagles jersey.
In a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in London, Agu described the move as a “great feeling,” revealing that his decision was driven by a desire to embrace his Nigerian heritage. “It is a great feeling to represent Nigeria, such a big country,” the 25-year-old said. “This is about connecting with my Nigerian roots from my father’s side.”
Agu, who had only featured in two friendly games for Germany’s U21 side back in 2019, was recently cleared by FIFA after the German Football Federation confirmed he was never capped in any competitive fixture.
Now part of the Super Eagles squad for the much-anticipated Unity Cup clash against Ghana, Agu is determined to make an impact, both in the friendly and future national assignments. He praised the positive atmosphere in the Eagles’ camp, noting the warm welcome he has received. “My experience so far has been good. I’ve had two training sessions now — a very warm welcome, great guys here, and I’m looking forward to the game,” he said.
Agu also spoke about his love for Nigerian football legend Jay Jay Okocha, and revealed he is a fan of popular Nigerian music stars Burna Boy, Omah Lay, and Davido. His favourite dishes include the iconic jollof rice and plantain.
The Werder Bremen star had an impressive 2024/2025 Bundesliga season, making 22 appearances and scoring three goals — form which is expected to bolster Nigeria’s defence line. Agu’s speed, versatility, and resilience are seen as assets that could boost the Super Eagles’ ambitions going forward.
As the highly anticipated Nigeria versus Ghana encounter draws closer, Agu is eager to contribute meaningfully to the team’s performance, hoping to help the Eagles soar to new heights.
