Mokwa Flood: Death toll rises to 161 as search continues

The Niger State Government has announced the recovery of three more bodies from the devastating flood disaster that struck Mokwa Local Government Area, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 161.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, June 5, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, it was confirmed that two of the bodies were found on Tuesday evening, while one was recovered on Wednesday evening. The recovered bodies have since been buried.
The government extended its heartfelt appreciation to individuals, organisations, and groups who have continued to donate to support efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering of those affected by the flood. According to the statement, these donations — whether financial, material, or in kind — have provided much-needed hope and relief to several families who have been left devastated by the disaster.
“As we continue to mourn the lives lost, the Government remains committed to providing the necessary support to affected families,” the statement read.
The government also reaffirmed its dedication to ongoing rescue and relief operations, while urging residents to remain calm and prayerful during this difficult period.
“May their souls rest in peace,” it concluded.
