Black Sunday: 21 die in auto crash on Zaria-Kano Expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 21 people in a tragic accident that occurred on Sunday, July 6, 2025, along the Zaria-Kano expressway.
The incident, which happened around 8:20 am at Kasuwar Dogo Dakatsale, involved a DAF truck and a commercial Toyota Hiace passenger bus.
According to a statement released by the FRSC, investigations revealed that the crash was caused by the driver of the passenger bus, who violated traffic rules by driving against the flow of traffic. This reckless act led to a fatal head-on collision with the oncoming truck.
Out of the 24 persons involved in the crash, 21 lost their lives on the spot, including 19 male adults and two female adults. The remaining three passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed for medical attention.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at Nasarawa Hospital in Kano, while emergency responders and FRSC officials worked together to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow on the busy highway.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public that full investigations are ongoing to uncover all circumstances surrounding the incident. He also warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against reckless practices like route violations, driving against traffic, excessive speeding, and dangerous overtaking.
He stressed that traffic regulations are in place to safeguard lives and property, and adherence to these rules remains the surest way to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to intensify nationwide enforcement operations and public awareness campaigns aimed at promoting safer roads across the country.
Road users were encouraged to report any dangerous driving behavior via the FRSC Mobile App, toll-free number 122, or to the nearest patrol team.
