Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress battle Argentina in classification round of FIBA U-19 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress will take on Argentina today (Friday) in the classification round of the FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup ongoing in Brno, Czech Republic, as they aim to secure a respectable finish following their exit from title contention.

Led by coach Juliana Akhere, the Nigerian girls suffered a 77-51 defeat to Hungary in the round of 16 on Wednesday, ending their hopes of claiming the world title. However, they now look to salvage pride by securing a place between 9th and 16th when they face the South Americans at the Starez Arena Vodova Hall in Brno.

This is Nigeria’s debut appearance at the global tournament, and they have so far averaged 61.8 points, 42.3 rebounds, and 11.8 assists per game. Their free throw accuracy stands at 65.8 per cent, with 33.1 per cent efficiency in two-point field goals and 21.2 per cent from beyond the arc.

Argentina, who have lost all four of their matches at the tournament, average 46.5 points, 32 rebounds, and 12.3 assists per game. They have posted a 64.6 per cent free throw conversion rate, along with 39.2 per cent and 22.6 per cent success in two-point and three-point field goals, respectively.

In the group stage, Nigeria opened with a historic win over China but failed to maintain their momentum, falling to both Canada and Portugal to finish third in Group B with four points. The loss to Hungary in the knockout round confirmed their placement in the classification stage.

Argentina’s campaign has been dismal, beginning with a 68-47 loss to Spain and followed by heavy defeats to Czechia (77-49), Japan (83-44), and Australia (95-46).

Toby Nweke has been Nigeria’s standout player, averaging 11.5 points per game, thanks to double-digit scoring in her last two outings. Meanwhile, Argentina’s top contributor is Nerea Lagowski, who has averaged nine points per game.

The winner of today’s encounter will face either Brazil or South Korea in the next classification match.
