CAF confirms Morocco as host of WAFCON 2026
The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has confirmed that Morocco will host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as originally scheduled.
The tournament, now in its 16th edition, will take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026, putting to rest speculation about a possible postponement or change of host nation.
Motsepe made the clarification after a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Dar es Salaam, stressing that Morocco remains fully engaged and prepared to stage the competition.
“There is discussion taking place, and a lot of competitions. Morocco came to assist. There were many countries that wanted to host it, but because we didn’t have time and our standards were very high, the WAFCON continues. As we speak now, we still have an engagement with Morocco,” he said.
No Date Change, Says CAF
Amid reports suggesting potential adjustments to the tournament calendar, Motsepe emphasised that the dates remain fixed in alignment with FIFA’s international schedule.
He noted that WAFCON 2026 serves as a crucial qualifying pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, making any change in dates impractical.
“We can’t change the date because it is part of the qualification pathway for the Women’s World Cup. WAFCON will continue and it will be successful,” he added.
Third Consecutive Hosting for Morocco
The 2026 edition will mark the third consecutive time Morocco hosts the continental women’s championship, following the 2022 and 2024 tournaments.

Although South Africa had reportedly indicated readiness to step in if needed, CAF has reaffirmed its commitment to Morocco as host.
The upcoming tournament will feature an expanded 16-team format and will play a decisive role in determining Africa’s representatives at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
