Carrick urges Tuchel to recall Man United trio for England friendlies
Former Michael Carrick has called on England manager Thomas Tuchel to consider selecting three Manchester United players—Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo—for upcoming international friendlies.
Tuchel, who assumed charge of the England national football team in January 2025, is yet to include any United player in his squad, with Marcus Rashford only featuring during his loan spells away from Old Trafford.
Carrick described the situation as reflective of United’s struggles in recent years but insisted the trio have done enough to merit a recall ahead of friendlies against Japan and Uruguay later this month.
Maguire, who has represented England in three major tournaments, last featured for the national team 18 months ago, earning 64 caps. Meanwhile, Mainoo’s most recent appearance also came in the same Nations League clash against Ireland in September 2024.
The 20-year-old midfielder, once hailed as a future England mainstay after starting the Euro 2024 final against Spain, saw his form dip during Ruben Amorim’s tenure but has since rediscovered consistency under Carrick.
Shaw, who also played in the Euro 2024 final defeat, is another strong contender as Tuchel prepares to name his squad for the final home friendlies before the World Cup in North America, scheduled to begin on June 11.
The trio have been regular starters in Carrick’s nine matches in charge following Amorim’s dismissal, helping United climb to third place in the league standings.
“For the boys, I’d love to see them picked for this one and obviously picked for the summer,” Carrick told reporters.
He, however, admitted he has had no direct contact with Tuchel regarding selections.
“I don’t have any influence on that but certainly the boys, the way they’re playing, I think they’ve put themselves right in the conversation,” he added.
Carrick maintained that their performances justify national team consideration, though the final decision rests solely with Tuchel.
