Doctor urges Portable to undergo brain scan after defeat in celebrity boxing match
A Nigeria-born, Canada-based medical practitioner, Arinze Onwumelu, has advised controversial singer Portable to undergo urgent medical evaluation following his defeat in a celebrity boxing bout against skit maker Carter Efe.
The bout, held over the weekend in Lagos, drew widespread attention across social media platforms, with fans reacting to the high-intensity exchanges that eventually saw Portable lose the match.
In a viral video shared online, Onwumelu—popularly known as Dr Zo—expressed concern over the nature of blows delivered during the contest, warning of possible internal head injuries.
According to him, the punches sustained by the singer could expose him to a subdural haematoma, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by bleeding in the brain.
> “This is meant to be entertainment, not a fight to cause harm. The kind of punches delivered could have serious consequences,” he said.
The doctor specifically recommended a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to detect any hidden trauma, noting that damage to blood vessels in the brain may not present immediate symptoms.
Safety Concerns Over Celebrity Boxing
Beyond the immediate health warning, Onwumelu raised broader concerns about safety standards in celebrity boxing events, stressing the need for preventive measures.
He called on organisers to make protective gear—particularly headguards—mandatory in future matches to reduce the risk of severe head injuries.
Portable’s Pre-Fight Confidence
Prior to the fight, Portable had expressed strong confidence in his fitness and readiness, citing previous victories in similar exhibition bouts against rapper Speed Darlington and actor Charles Okocha.
However, his latest outing against Carter Efe has sparked fresh debate about the risks associated with entertainment-driven boxing contests involving non-professional fighters.
