LASU staff unions begin indefinite strike, academic activities grounded
Academic activities have been brought to a halt at Lagos State University (LASU) following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the institution’s staff unions.
The strike, which began on Thursday, was declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the institution’s unions over unresolved issues with the university’s management.
The JAC comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
In a letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions notified the university of their decision to embark on the industrial action.
The letter, obtained by Channels Television, was jointly signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare and Sylvester O. Idowu; SSANU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Oluwaseyi Lawal and Waheed Majekodunmi; along with representatives from NAAT and NASU.
“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions… we write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University,” the statement read.
“All members of staff of the university and its affiliate campuses (LASUCOM, Ikeja, and LASU Epe Campus) are hereby directed to withdraw their services and vacate their official duty posts with immediate effect.”
The unions emphasized that the strike would remain in effect until all staff demands are met by the appropriate authorities.
The development comes just days before LASU students were expected to begin their second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session on Monday.
