Storm wrecks Kugbo bus terminal months after commissioning, triggers Abuja gridlock
Commuters were stranded in heavy traffic along the Nyanya–Keffi Expressway in Abuja after a section of the Kugbo Bus Terminal, commissioned months ago by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was damaged by a windstorm.
The incident, which occurred during rainfall, saw the roof of the yet-to-be-utilised terminal blown off, with debris spilling onto the busy highway and worsening traffic congestion during peak hours as workers headed home.
Eyewitnesses said the fallen structure obstructed parts of the expressway, leading to a prolonged gridlock and leaving commuters frustrated for hours.
The Kugbo Bus Terminal, inaugurated in June as part of efforts to modernise transportation infrastructure in the capital city, had not been put into operation before the incident.
The development has raised concerns among residents over the durability and quality of public infrastructure projects, especially those recently completed.
While there has been no immediate official statement from the Federal Capital Territory Administration, authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage and determine necessary remedial actions.
The incident adds to growing scrutiny of infrastructure standards in the nation’s capital, particularly in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather conditions.
