Tinubu endorses media support requests, urges Editors to uphold patriotism, fairness

President Bola Tinubu has backed the Nigeria Guild of Editors’ (NGE) appeals for measures to support the struggling media sector, urging editors to exercise their watchdog role with patriotism and fairness while warning against misinformation that could threaten national unity.

Speaking at the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) in Abuja, Tinubu endorsed the Guild’s requests, which include corporate tax relief, VAT exemptions, low-interest loans, digitalisation grants, and the repeal of restrictive laws. He said, “You know, your request is in my pocket,” signaling his support for the initiatives.

The President stressed the importance of responsible journalism, reminding editors that criticism of government must not undermine national cohesion or Nigeria’s global image. He highlighted the media’s historic role in national awakening and democratic resistance, urging verification, balance, and fairness in reporting.

“Debate is part of our reality, but disagreement must never translate into weakening national unity. The national interest must be paramount,” Tinubu said, while also acknowledging ongoing security challenges from terrorism and banditry, noting the dedication of security forces.

NGE President Eze Anaba had earlier raised concerns over the financial distress facing the Nigerian media, citing soaring operational costs and newsprint prices, warning that many organisations struggle to pay salaries. He stressed that a thriving press is essential for democracy, noting that proposed interventions were safeguards, not patronage.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, the keynote speaker, emphasised editorial responsibility in shaping public perception ahead of the 2027 elections. He urged editors to embrace “objectivity of responsibility” to prevent polarisation and restore trust in democratic processes, citing public mistrust following the 2023 elections.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised the administration’s commitment to press freedom, highlighting that no broadcast station had been shut down for critical reporting and pointing to UNESCO’s decision to grant Nigeria hosting rights for the global Media and Information Literacy Institute.

Tinubu and other speakers collectively encouraged Nigerian editors to act as partners in national development through responsible reporting, underlining the media’s crucial role in safeguarding democracy and fostering national unity.
