Massive Turnout as Journalists Elect New NUJ FCT Leadership

The much-anticipated election of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council witnessed a massive turnout as journalists across the Federal Capital Territory exercised their franchise to elect new leadership.
Held at the NUJ FCT Secretariat, Utako, the election drew wide participation from media professionals representing various organisations, underscoring the importance of the union in advancing the welfare and professional integrity of journalists.
The voting process, which commenced early in the day, was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner. Journalists arrived at the venue in large numbers, showing remarkable enthusiasm and unity. Comrade Henry Umoru, the chairman of the credential committee, ensured a smooth and transparent process that upheld democratic principles.
Addressing the press after casting his vote, a few veteran journalists and union members from Voice of Nigeria, FRCN, Information Chapel, and other notable journalists praised the process, stating, “Today’s turnout demonstrates our commitment to fostering strong leadership and accountability within the NUJ. This election is pivotal in setting the tone for the future of journalism in the FCT.”
Candidates vying for various positions canvassed for votes, emphasising their plans to address key issues such as improved welfare packages, training opportunities, and media freedom.
Preliminary reports indicated a smooth collation of votes as journalists eagerly awaited the announcement of results, which is expected to reflect the collective voice of the union members.
The NUJ FCT election, a cornerstone of democratic engagement within the media community, further reinforces the role of journalists as critical stakeholders in nation-building and advocates for good governance.
The election, which was conducted on 4th December 2024, ushered in the new executive of the NUJ FCT council.
