Nigeria Police fix January 2, 2026 for full enforcement of tinted glass regulation

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume nationwide enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit regulation from January 2, 2026, citing growing security concerns linked to the use of unauthorised tinted vehicle glass.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, the police said the decision followed a careful review of emerging security threats and the need to ensure the safety of lives and property across the country.

The Force clarified that there has never been any court order restraining it from enforcing the law regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles. However, enforcement was earlier suspended in the interest of transparency, responsibility and public convenience, to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit application process without undue pressure.

According to the police, recent developments have shown a disturbing increase in criminal activities carried out with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.

“Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes,” the statement said.

In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force said it had become both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the policy as a proactive measure to safeguard communities nationwide.

“Consequently, enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit will resume on 2nd January, 2026,” the Force stated.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured members of the public that the renewed enforcement would be carried out with professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights and strict adherence to existing laws.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to public safety, the rule of law and collaboration with stakeholders to enhance national security.

Motorists who require tinted glass permits were advised to apply through approved channels and ensure full compliance with legal requirements ahead of the enforcement date.
