EFCC arrests 10 suspects over illegal mining in Kwara, Oyo
Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested ten suspects in connection with alleged illegal mining activities along the Ilorin–Ogbomosho axis, spanning parts of Kwara and Oyo States.
The arrests were carried out on Sunday, February 1, 2026, following credible intelligence linking the suspects to unlawful excavation and transportation of solid minerals in the area.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency said those arrested comprised nine truck drivers and one escort, who were intercepted during a coordinated sting operation.
According to the EFCC, solid minerals recovered from the suspects include lithium, tin and lepidolite, which were being transported without proper authorisation.
“The suspects failed to produce the required licences, permits or regulatory approvals for the mining and conveyance of the solid minerals,” the statement said.
Trucks used in conveying the allegedly illegally mined materials were also seized during the operation.
The commission disclosed that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the probe.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to curbing illegal mining activities, which it described as a major threat to national revenue, environmental sustainability and community safety.
