One person has been confirmed dead, while three others sustained critical injuries after a two-storey building under construction collapsed along Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road, Lagos State, in the early hours of Friday.

The incident reportedly occurred around midnight, trapping construction workers beneath the rubble.

According to local sources, the workers had slept at the construction site ahead of the next day’s activities when the building suddenly collapsed.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), alongside other safety teams, arrived at the scene and commenced search-and-rescue operations.

The responders rescued three adult male workers alive and recovered the body of another adult male from the debris.

The injured survivors were taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while rescue operations continued to determine whether anyone else remained trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Confirming the incident, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the cause of the collapse had yet to be established.

He said emergency responders were working to determine the number of workers who might still be trapped beneath the rubble.

“Emergency responders are making frantic efforts to ascertain the number of people (onsite workers) trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

“Coordinated search and rescue ongoing with the agency’s excavator.

“Meanwhile, as at 3:33am, three adult males rescued alive, while one adult male recovered dead. Operations ongoing,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown as emergency teams continue their operations.
