Nigerian Army uncovers plans to re-establish illegal refining camps in Bayelsa
The Nigerian Army’s 6th Division has successfully thwarted attempts to re-establish illegal refining camps in the Niger Delta, a significant operation aimed at combating economic sabotage and criminal activities in the region.
The troops have arrested 28 individuals suspected of involvement in oil theft and dismantled 18 illegal bunkering sites.
In addition to the arrests and dismantling of illegal operations, the army recovered a staggering 72,000 litres of stolen products across Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa states. The operations have significantly weakened the illegal oil refining trade, which has long been a challenge for the region’s security and economy.
Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah, the spokesman for the 6th Division, reported that while operations in Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta states were underway, a separate operation in Akwa Ibom State led to the interception of eight 30-litre jerricans used to transport Automated Gasoline Oil (AGO). All suspects involved in this particular incident were arrested along the Okobo-Uyo road in the Okobo Local Government Area.
The ongoing efforts reflect the military’s commitment to curbing oil theft and ensuring the economic stability of the Niger Delta.
