China denies involvement in Ukraine war after capture of its Nationals

The Chinese government has dismissed recent claims of its involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict following the capture of two of its nationals by Ukrainian forces.

On Tuesday, Beijing labeled the situation as “manipulation and hype” after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of dragging China into the war.

During a press briefing, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, said the government is currently verifying the circumstances surrounding the captured individuals.

“China is verifying the relevant information and circumstances,” Lin said when asked about the reported prisoners of war. He further urged all parties to “accurately understand China’s objective and impartial stance, and to refrain from political manipulation and hype.”

Zelensky Raises Alarm Over Chinese Fighters

Ukrainian authorities held a press conference on Monday, during which two Chinese prisoners of war, under armed guard, expressed hope for a future prisoner exchange and warned fellow citizens against joining the war.

President Zelensky had earlier claimed that several hundred Chinese nationals were already fighting on the frontlines for Russia.

However, China maintains that it has consistently advised its citizens against traveling to conflict zones. “China has repeatedly issued safety advisories, urging Chinese citizens to stay away from areas of armed conflict and to avoid becoming involved in conflict in any form,” Lin reiterated.

Beijing Emphasizes Neutrality

China continues to present itself as a neutral party in the ongoing war and insists it does not provide lethal support to either side—unlike Western nations such as the United States.

Despite its proclaimed neutrality, China’s close economic and political ties with Russia have raised concerns in the West. NATO allies have labeled Beijing a “decisive enabler” of the war, although China has never openly condemned Moscow’s actions.

Lin concluded that individual actions involving Chinese nationals overseas are handled based on law and consular protocols: “With regard to the individual actions and consular cases involving Chinese citizens overseas, China handles them in accordance with the law.”

The situation adds a new layer of complexity to China’s balancing act between its ties to Russia and its global diplomatic image.
