Former Petroleum Minister Prof. Jibrin Aminu dies at 85
A former Minister of Petroleum, Professor Jibrin Aminu, has passed away at the age of 85. The respected elder statesman died on Thursday at his residence in Abuja.
Confirming the sad development, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, described the loss as monumental—not just for Adamawa State, but for the entire country.
In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonousikou, the governor paid glowing tribute to the late Aminu, calling him “a towering figure in Nigeria’s intellectual and political landscape.”
Professor Aminu served Nigeria in several key capacities, including as Minister of Education and later as Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. He also held the position of Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States and represented Adamawa Central in the Senate.
“In each of these capacities, he embodied dignity, insight, and an unwavering commitment to national development,” Governor Fintiri said.
The governor further described Aminu as one of Nigeria’s finest minds, a devoted public servant, and a distinguished son of Adamawa, whose legacy would live on. “His life’s work is an enduring gift to the nation, and his humility and wisdom will be sorely missed,” Fintiri added.
He prayed for God’s mercy on the late professor, asking that his shortcomings be forgiven and his soul granted eternal rest. The governor also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and all Nigerians who were touched by Aminu’s extraordinary life.
“Though his death leaves a void, his legacy remains a guiding light for generations to come. May his soul find peace in the mercy of Allah,” the governor concluded.
