Army broker peace pact between ethnic groups in Taraba

In a major step toward restoring peace in Taraba State, the Commander of 6 Brigade Nigeria Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, has successfully facilitated the signing of a peace agreement between the Tiv and Fulani ethnic groups in Gassol Local Government Area.
The peace pact forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen peaceful coexistence among various communities in the state and underscores the army’s commitment to using dialogue and nonviolent methods in addressing conflicts.
The crucial meeting, which took place at the 6 Brigade Headquarters Conference Room in Jalingo, brought together traditional rulers, community elders, and key stakeholders from both sides.
It followed heightened tensions and unresolved communal clashes between the two groups and was aimed at averting further violence.
Brigadier General Uwa, while addressing the gathering, condemned the cycle of violence that has long plagued the area and warned against individuals taking the law into their hands. He stressed that no person or group has the authority to enforce justice outside of legal provisions.
A statement by Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at the 6 Brigade, called on all participants to become true ambassadors of peace within their communities. He highlighted that sustainable security, development, and prosperity can only thrive in an atmosphere of mutual respect and unity.
During the meeting, both parties agreed to maintain regular dialogue, desist from harbouring criminals within their communities, and provide timely information to security agencies to prevent future crises.
Speaking on behalf of the Gassol communities, the council chairman, Abubakar Usman, praised the military for its continuous sacrifices and efforts in restoring calm.
He also commended Brigadier General Uwa for his bold move in initiating the peace process.
The meeting ended with all sides signing a formal peace pact, pledging to uphold the agreements reached and support the authorities in ensuring full implementation of the resolutions.
