NUJ FCT holds memorial for ex‑chair Patrick Osadebamwen; pledges support for his three children

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council held a memorial service on Monday evening to honour the memory of Comrade Patrick Osadebamwen, a former chairman of the council and veteran journalist.

Comrade Ike also urged members to look out for one another daily and to preserve genuine friendships.

In a speech delivered by the Chairman of Council Comrade Grace Ike, the Union said Patrick’s death was first and foremost a loss to his immediate family, and called on colleagues to reflect on his contributions to journalism.

The council recalled Patrick’s long career in the media, noting his work with Union Newspaper, Core TV, The Nigerian Tribune and Kaftan TV, and his tenure as chairman of the NUJ FCT Council.

“Leadership within the NUJ comes with its own demands and challenges,” she said, adding that Patrick had “contributed to the affairs and development of the Union” during his time in office.

The council urged members to recognise his place in the history of the FCT Council and the profession.

The NUJ also emphasised its duty to support bereaved families, saying it has been engaged with Patrick’s family since the news of his passing and was mindful of the three children he left behind.

The council thanked the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, for their “prompt assistance” in evacuating Patrick’s remains.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Iniedu, was also acknowledged for representing the IGP and conveying his condolences.

Addressing colleagues, the Council Chairman said the memorial should serve as a reminder to strengthen professional bonds despite disagreements and changes in leadership.

“Positions are temporary, professional engagements come and go, and ultimately, what remains is the impact we make on the people and institutions we encounter,” the council said.

The NUJ FCT Council extended condolences to Patrick’s family, friends, and associates, and prayed for strength for the family and eternal rest for the departed.

The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, represented by the NUJ National Secretary, Comrade Achike Chude, joined other speakers in eulogizing the late former chairman and prayed that his soul may rest in peace.
