Nigerian Army, Air Force crush terrorist advance in Niger State, 17 Soldiers killed
The Nigerian Army has confirmed that its troops, supported by the Nigerian Air Force, successfully repelled a major terrorist incursion into Bangi community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
According to Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, the operation, based on credible intelligence, saw troops engage over 300 armed bandits attempting a night movement through Kwanar Dutse Forest.
The suspected terrorists, reportedly fleeing intensified military pressure in Zamfara, were intercepted in a fierce confrontation lasting over three hours. As the troops held ground engagements, the Nigerian Air Force launched precision airstrikes along the terrorists’ escape routes, inflicting heavy casualties.
While the exact number of deaths remains uncertain, multiple blood trails along the withdrawal paths indicated severe losses for the attackers. The Army confirmed that 17 soldiers paid the supreme price, while 10 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility in stable condition.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and directed the best medical attention for the wounded. He assured that the Nigerian Army remains firm in its resolve to protect citizens and defeat terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities threatening national security.
The Army called on Nigerians to continue providing timely information to security agencies to support ongoing operations aimed at restoring peace across troubled regions.
