Senator Al-Makura to Chair NUJ FCT Press Week following visit by executives
Distinguished Senator Umaru Tanko Al-makura has described the media as watchdog of the society and partners for national development.
The former Governor of Nasarawa State made this known on Wednesday when the executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ FCT Council paid him a courtesy visit in his office, inviting him to chair the upcoming 2025 press week scheduled to hold on the 22nd of July 2025
According to him, “I am happy for the recognition, I have practiced broadcast Journalism after graduation at the beginning of my working career as an Assistant Producer for News and Current Affairs at the defunct Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria (BCNN), now the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
“Journalists are frontline workers in the quest for Justice and national development.
“I pledge to attend the Press Week because of my love for the media.” He said.
Senator Al-makura assured the Council of his unwavering commitment for the industry and his commitment to promoting the advancement of the profession
On her part, the chairman of the NUJ FCT, Comrade Grace Ike who led the delegation lauded senator Al-makura’s achievements given his track record of public service and commitment to democratic values noting his leadership as Chairman of the occasion will greatly inspire the media community and underscore the importance of a free and responsible press in our society.
According to her “ This year’s event will be held under the theme: “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy and Society.”
Ike noted that the Press Week aims to highlight the evolving landscape of journalism and its critical role in safeguarding democracy, promoting transparency, and defending press freedom in Nigeria.
The event is scheduled to hold at the esteemed Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja with dignitaries in attendance
