Borussia Dortmund sign Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka on permanent deal
Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea in a deal running until 2030.
The 21-year-old England U-21 international, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund, joins for a reported €25 million ($29 million).
He made 17 appearances in all competitions during his loan spell, scoring once, and was praised for his performances despite injury setbacks.
Chukwuemeka expressed delight over the move, saying: “I’m happy Borussia Dortmund is now my footballing home. I will give everything to make sure we achieve our goals as a team.”
Born in Austria, the midfielder grew up in England, rising through Aston Villa’s academy before joining Chelsea in 2022.
Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken welcomed the signing, describing Chukwuemeka as a player who will “further increase the quality and creativity of our attacking midfield.”
The transfer continues Dortmund’s busy summer, having already brought in Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland and Yan Couto from Manchester City. Jobe’s older brother, Jude, enjoyed a successful stint at Dortmund before moving to Real Madrid in 2023 for around €100 million.
German outlet Bild reported that Dortmund are also pursuing Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino and Wolves striker Fabio Silva before the transfer deadline.
Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, who has had two previous spells at Dortmund, has also been linked with a potential return.
Meanwhile, the club announced on Tuesday that coach Niko Kovac’s contract has been extended until 2027.
