Chevron, NUJ FCT train journalists on using Artificial Intelligence in journalism
Chevron Nigeria Limited, in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, held a one-day training session for journalists focused on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern journalism.
The training took place on Tuesday in Abuja and brought together journalists from different media houses to learn about how new technologies—especially AI—are changing the way journalism is done.
Speaking at the event, Mr Olusoga Oduselu, Chevron’s General Manager for Policy, Government and Public Affairs, was represented by Victor Anyaegbudike, Manager of Communications. He spoke about Chevron’s continued support for training and ethical journalism.

“Chevron Nigeria believes in the value derivable from developing human capital. Through programmes like this and our AWARES initiative with Pan Atlantic University, we’ve trained over 120 journalists since 2014,” Oduselu stated.
He also praised journalists for their important role in shaping public discussion and reporting on complex matters in the oil and gas sector. Oduselu noted that Chevron is committed to sustainable development through support for local content, community projects via Host Community Development Trusts (HCDTs), and by working to cut carbon emissions and reduce gas flaring.
Comrade Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, also spoke during the event. She highlighted how AI is changing the media landscape.

“AI is no longer a distant concept but a powerful tool reshaping how we gather, verify, and deliver news. From fact-checking to personalised content delivery, AI helps us do more, faster and more accurately,” she said.
She explained how AI tools can help fight misinformation, connect better with audiences, and improve newsroom efficiency through features like automated transcription and data analysis. However, she also warned that AI should be used responsibly.
“As we adopt these technologies, we must uphold core journalistic values, truthfulness, accuracy, authenticity, and ethical responsibility,” she added.
Grace Ike thanked Chevron Nigeria for sponsoring the training, describing it as an important step in helping journalists keep up with the fast-changing digital media world.

During the training, participants took part in sessions on different AI tools, the ethics of using automation in news reporting, and hands-on demonstrations of how AI can support newsgathering.
The event is part of Chevron Nigeria’s wider aim to build strong relationships with the media and encourage journalism that is both innovative and responsible—helping to strengthen democracy and hold power to account.
At the end of the day, all journalists who took part were given certificates of participation signed by both NUJ and Chevron.
